Sister Lawrence Portrait Exhibition
In a proud moment for the College, the NZ Portrait Gallery has just opened an exhibition of the work of Sister Lawrence (1896 – 1975), a former St Mary's art teacher and Mercy sister.
Sister Lawrence (Julia B. Lynch) taught Art for more than five decades at St Mary's College, while pursuing her work as an artist alongside. She mainly painted portraits, but also religious paintings, landscapes and abstracts, and sculpture work. She often painted portraits of her students as well as iconic people such as Jean Batten and Norman Kirk. Her work contributed to fundraising for the school, including the building of the gym. She is still well remembered by many former students.
The NZ Portrait Gallery exhibition is a celebration of a talented artist whose ability to capture a good likeness was imbedded in both her formal art education and her observational skills. Her contribution to New Zealand art, and in particular portraiture, is significant.
The exhibition is open now, so do head along to see her work.
