Ngā Maioha O Te Rangikauia - going from strength to strength

Comms STMW —

Ngā Maioha O Te Rangikauia, the St Mary’s, St Catherine’s and St Patrick’s combined Kapa Haka group have been working hard in preparation for this year’s regional competition.

Under the expert guidance of Matua Motown Parata, the group’s commitment and passion have been outstanding, with their journey so far marked by two very successful noho.

The first noho took place at the end of Term One at St Catherine’s College, offering a focused environment for learning waiata, haka, and refining kapa haka fundamentals. The second noho was held at Ngā Hau e Wha Wainuiomata Marae over the second weekend of May, where students had the special opportunity to connect and strengthen their sense of whanaungatanga.

To support their mahi, the group have also held a hangi fundraiser, which was prepared at Ngā Hau e Whā o Paparārangi Marae. The event was a huge success, with over 300 hangi sold, and served as a powerful show of support from our community.

All of this is in preparation for the Regional Kapa Haka Competition, which will take place on Monday 16 June at Te Rauparaha Arena. The excitement is building as our tauira continue to work hard towards a performance that promises to showcase their aroha, unity, and dedication.

A huge thank you goes out to the incredible whānau who have prepared food, helped with logistics, and supported the group behind the scenes—your contribution has been invaluable. Thank you also to our kaiako who have supported the rōpū every step of the way: Whaea Chez from St Catherine’s College, Whaea Yumiko and Meg Davies from St Mary’s, and Lucy McLeod and Ian McFadyen from St Patrick’s.

He waka eke noa – we are all in this together!
