September is a special period for the Catholic Church, as we celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary’s birthday and dedicate this month to Our Lady of Sorrows. As a college community, we have gathered together in several ways to honour and nurture our Catholic faith. Our Year 11s shared a retreat experience at the Island Bay Home of Compassion, while the rest of the school dedicated their Friday 8th September to the Blessed Virgin Mary’s birthday, complete with Mr. Whippy and House activities.

Whakawhanaungatanga is the Māori principle of building relationships, growing our connections, and building peace and unity within our St Mary’s College whānau. We are fortunate to base our daily school experience on the common good of all our people, working in solidarity. Jesus says, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Mt 5:7). This highlights the deep connection between our relationship with others and the mercy we experience ourselves from God.

Our Mercy Day Mass was held on Tuesday 19 September, at St Paul’s Cathedral and we were thrilled to celebrate our grandparents and our first whānau recipients of the Catherine McAuley Service Medal. It was so good to see so many of you there. As we come to the end of a busy term, enjoy a well-rested holiday!
