Music updates

Musical success from some of our Senior Music students:

Carmel Fernandes has been selected to play Alto Saxophone 2, in the auditioned "2024 Wellington Allstars Youth Big Band". Their first concert is at the Musicworks Ensemble Festival Aotearoa Gala. They open for the Air Force Band. They are also scheduled to perform at the Wellington International Jazz Festival in Oct 2024.

Pia Berendsen recently entered for a piano exam and received a high distinction award - the highest level of achievement!

Tialei Simiti competed in the national final of the NZ Chamber Music Contest. The level of competition is extremely high.  The finals were held at the Michael Fowler Centre, and Tialei’s group the Virtuoso Strings Octet not only received the award for best performance of a NZ work, but they were also second in the whole competition!

Arts Week

Arts Week was held in Week 4 and brought the school alive with a whole range of Arts activities.

We started the week with a great poetry writing workshop and a whole school quiz.  On Tuesday at Mercy time we brought the whole school together again for a house riff-off competition - followed by a year level competition and a dance battle.  Well done to Anne house for winning the house riff-off!  It was great to have the gym filled with so many great voices and such enthusiasm.  At lunchtime on Tuesday there were fun drama games with lots of funny improv moments from the students taking part.   On Wednesday at lunchtime the hall was alive with an energetic Just Dance session.  Thursday was a big day!  We had a debate at lunchtime with the Wellington College Premier A team debating against our Premier B team on the topic “this house believes that Santa Claus is evil” with a fantastic win to our team.  We followed this up with our annual Soiree in the evening.  Always a magical time when the hall is decked out in candles and some of our stars entertain us with solo or small group items.  The last event was a poetry/spoken word competition on Friday lunchtime won by Pote in Y11!  We have also had Art competitions running all week.

A big thank you to the Arts Committee students who are led by our Deputy Head Girl Arts, Aeryn.  It was a fabulous week showcasing and participating in lots of different Arts activities.
