Celebrating Caps in October
Caps may be awarded to students involved in Senior team sports. The awards are made at the discretion of the coach, but will generally reflect outstanding achievement in the particular sport, and the length of time a player has been in the team.
Netball Cap
Jess Laws (Year 13) has been a member of the St Paul’s Collegiate Premier Netball team since the start of 2022 and has been in the starting lineup for games over the two seasons gaining over 50 caps for the team. A reliable shooter, Jess directed play in the attack end of the court and her outstanding accuracy often kept the team in the game or within reach of a win. She calmly shoots, from any distance, even under great pressure and is always quick to switch to defence when the ball is turned over.
Jess supports other players and uses her experience to assist others with strategies to combat strong defensive opposition. Jess has represented Hamilton City Representative teams in 2021, 2022 and 2023 and been involved in the Waikato Bay of Plenty Netball Academy. As an integral part of St Paul’s Collegiate Premier Netball team for the past two years, Jess receives her Premier Netball Cap.
Basketball Cap
Kaleb Mackay (Year 13) has been an integral member of Premier Basketball since Year 9 in 2019. His basketball talent has developed to see Kaleb become the Captain in Year 13 where he led from the front in both our local competition and at tournament week. He possesses an array of skills that are impressive. He has good hands and can finish around the rim exceptionally well, often he will do so with a deft touch and finesse whilst posing a threat as an outside shooter. He can attack the hoop as a guard and can traverse between the inside and outside. It is these skills that have seen him be selected for Waikato A this year, which placed 3rd at Nationals, and he was also selected for the Koru Tour U17. He has been a juggernaut as a player and leader and is fully deserving of his basketball cap and his future is a bright one in the sport.
Hockey Cap
Richard Ruetsch (Year 12) is the goalkeeper for the Boy's 1st XI Hockey, Richard is relied upon to save the day when the opposition breaks through our defence. His stature alone makes him a noticeable presence in the circle. His naturally quick reflexes and hand-eye coordination are complimented by his ever-improving technique and positioning. After debuting in 2021 as a Year 10 on his break from Tihoi, Richard has spent time as the second-string keeper behind older brother Matt. However, since stepping into the top role he has delivered on the promise he showed as a younger player. Richard was selected as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Waikato U18 Men's Team in 2023 and is a deserved recipient of his 1st XI Hockey Cap.
Qayde Wright (Year 12) made his debut for the Boy's 1st XI Hockey in 2022. As a striker, he offers strength in possession of the ball and an unwavering commitment to following the game plan. His positioning in attacking situations has led to him scoring a number of important goals in the past two years. Qayde has shown impressive improvement over the last two seasons, indicating he takes on board advice and learns from his mistakes. He has grown in both experience and ability and was relied upon to play big minutes in crucial games during the 2023 season.
