Strong performances at Summer Tournament Week

St Paul's Collegiate School

More than 100 students represented St Paul’s Collegiate School across eight codes during Summer Tournament Week, returning with several standout results and a collection of medals, trophies, and top placings.

Rowing

The biggest haul of silverware came from Lake Karāpiro, where St Paul’s rowers delivered a dominant performance at the 2024 New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Championships and Maadi Cup. Across the week, the team secured 15 A final appearances and 11 top-five finishes—a remarkable achievement reflecting the squad's strength and depth.

Among the highlights, George Benjamin claimed gold in the BU17 single sculls, also earning a new boat for the school. George was part of the BU16 quad sculls crew alongside Gus Weir, Tyler Tretheway, Caleb Blake, and Hugh Trower, who also secured gold.

The success continued with silver medals for the BU18 quad sculls plus coxed crew of Gus Weir, Finn Rayner, George Benjamin, Sam Shultz, and Fletcher Rogers, and the GU16 quad sculls crew of Polly Hunter, Klaudia Horsfall, Hazel Church, Ananya Bansal, and Tilly Millar. Zara Brangwynne and Olivia Waddell added to the tally with silver in the GU16 double sculls.

Two bronze medals rounded out the podium finishes, with Gus Weir and Tyler Tretheway placing third in the BU17 double sculls, and Zara Brangwynne, Olivia Waddell, Sophia Mason, Georgia Roberts, and Tilly Millar securing bronze in the GU17 quad sculls plus coxed.

Four St Paul’s rowers—Zara Brangwynne, George Benjamin, Gus Weir, and Tyler Tretheway—were named in the 2025 U18 North Island Rowing Trials.

St Paul’s Collegiate School congratulates all students who competed and thanks the many coaches, managers, and parent supporters who made these opportunities possible.

Cricket

The Boys' First XI Cricket Team also made their mark, taking out the regional title to book their place at the national finals later this year. In the tournament final, the team posted 229 runs before bowling Tauranga Boys’ College out for 132 in a dominant performance. Earlier in the week, they had secured wins over Christchurch Boys’ High, St Peter’s Cambridge, and Mount Maunganui College.

The Girls’ First XI and Colts Cricket Teams also took to the field during tournament week, facing strong opposition throughout.

Basketball

The Boys’ 3x3 Basketball Team impressed in the Central North Island Tournament, winning a thrilling semi-final over Rotorua Boys’ High School before falling just short in a nail-biting final against Mount Maunganui College, going down 18-20 to finish runners-up.

Water Polo

On the water polo front, the St Paul’s Girls’ Team finished sixth in Division 2, with standout player Caitlin Foote named in the NISS Tournament Team. The boys’ team placed 13th overall.

Volleyball & Futsal

In volleyball, the girls’ team showed grit and determination to place eighth in their division at the National Championships. Meanwhile, the junior boys’ futsal team notched two exciting wins against St Andrew’s College and Wellington College.

Golf

St Paul’s golfers—Mark Sripinyo, Boston Clark, Harry MacLeod, and Flynn Booth—battled tough conditions at the Waikato Secondary Schools Matchplay Championships at Te Awamutu. Harry MacLeod finished runner-up in Division 2.

Tennis

The Girls’ Tennis Team rounded out the week with a solid fifth-place finish.
