Chemistry experiments performed in kitchens

Jane Spenceley —

Year 10 chemistry lesson was an experiment of making hokey pokey and took place in each student’s kitchen.

Our budding year 10 scientists are learning about different types of chemical reactions. Yesterday’s chemistry lesson was an experiment of making hokey pokey and took place in each student’s kitchen. Making hokey pokey includes caramelisation reactions as the sugar heats and the thermal decomposition of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) makes the all-important bubbles for the honeycomb as the sugar doubles in size. Miss Spenceley said results ranged from clouds of deliciousness to burnt pots but they all had fun!
