Kiwi Ambassador for Study with New Zealand

Former International Student and Collegian Gabe Pinvanichkul (Sargood 2018-2022) was recently nominated by the International Department to be a Kiwi Ambassador for Study with New Zealand.

"It has been a couple of months since I finished high school at St Paul’s Collegiate School in Hamilton and I finally have a chance to reflect on the past five years (Year 9-13). I have gathered some advice that might help you make the most of your time while studying in New Zealand.

It can be tough to find the courage to take that first step away from home, but you quickly realise that it is all worth it. I was in a similar situation, but I knew it was a great opportunity to go study in New Zealand, even though I was so attached to my old life back in Thailand. I found the courage to live on my own and experience things I never knew existed - such as squash which has become one of my passions. So make that first step!

Secondly, make new friends. THEY ARE WHAT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL AT HOME! Speaking from experience, I would not have enjoyed my high school experience as much as I did, without all of my friends' help. They played a huge role in my growth and were always there for me through the tough times.

And lastly, continuously reflect on your experiences. This is the thing that still keeps me moving. As you look back to where you started you will realise how far you have come and it will give you the motivation to move forward and continue your journey.

I have now finished Year 13 and will be studying Health Science First Year (HSFY) at the University of Otago in 2023. Hope you have a wonderful year ahead of you!"
