Otago Junior Maths and Australian Maths Competition
The Otago Junior Maths Competition and Australian Maths Compelteation are a fantastic opportunity for young, budding mathematicians to put their wits against others across New Zealand and Australia,
They are challenged to be creative, to think 'outside the box', and to explore and extend their problem-solving skills.
This Year the Otago Junior Maths Competition's first round took place on Tuesday, 9 April, with 70 students from Years 9-11 signed up to compete. Twenty six students received Merit, placing them in the top half of the country for their age group. Of these 70 students, eight made it through to the second round of the competition on Wednesday 13 May and three students were upgraded to a Distinction which placed them in the top 15% nationwide. Well done to Lachlan Kay, Cullen Li and Ethan Peng.
The Australian Maths Competition took place on Wednesday 7 August, with 60 students signed up. This time the competition was open to all students from Year 9-13. Students were awarded participation, proficiency, credit, or distinction for their efforts. The following students were awarded Distinction, placing them i the top 15% amongst their peers nationwide: Mark Liao, Aditya Manda, Ethan Peng, George MacDonald and Murie Choi.
