Open Water Championships 2023
The New Zealand Secondary School Open Water Champs took place during the March exeat weekend at Blue Lake in Rotorua. Despite facing tough competition, several top swimmers from our school competed and put on an impressive performance.
Finn Freemantle took on the 3.5km swim around the lake and emerged as the 48th swimmer out of all 179 male participants, with a time of 52 minutes and 52 seconds. Notably, he also secured an impressive 9th place in his age group of 12-14.
Later in the day, Finn also completed the 500m swim earning a silver medal with a time of 5 minutes and 15 seconds in his age category.
Our senior swimmers also put on an excellent display at the competition. Jetta Kete completed the gruelling 3.5km swim placing 56th out of 171 female participants with an impressive time of 56 minutes and 37 seconds. This time placed her 23rd in her age division. Similarly, Matthew Chanwai completed the 1000m swim, emerging 13th out of 48 male participants with a speedy time of 12 minutes and 42 seconds and earning him a bronze medal in his 16-19 age category.
Overall, our swimmers demonstrated exceptional strength and endurance in the challenging discipline of open water swimming.
