T20 Waikato Valley champions
St Paul's Collegiate School — Mar 27, 2023
St Paul's Lodge Real Estate First XI played Cambridge Senior Men in the T20 Waikato Valley Championship final.
After winning the toss, St Paul's chose to bat first and wasted no time in taking the game to Cambridge. Lucas Hale showed excellent form by hitting the ball to all parts of the ground while the experienced Michael Robinson held the other end steady. The opening pair worked hard to rotate the strike making it difficult for the Cambridge bowlers to find a consistent length. Lucas reached his fifty-first, quickly followed by Michael; together they batted an impressive 133-run partnership in 14 overs.
Lucas eventually fell for 68 off 47 balls and Michael soon departed after for a classy 52 off 44 balls.
There were six overs remaining for the First XI to push toward the 200 mark. The team's middle order of Tom Yetsenga and Max Makeham kept the scoreboard ticking and applying pressure on the Cambridge fielders. In the final overs, the Benefield brothers showed their skills, with both Jay and Reilly trying to outdo each other and finishing the innings on a high with a competitive total of 179/4 in the 20 overs.
The stage was set for the bowlers to defend the total and secure a victory. In the second innings, the St Paul's team managed to pick up wickets at regular intervals with right-arm spinner Will Hadley taking five wickets for only 12 runs. There was also some sharp fielding and excellent catches. Cambridge struggled to keep up with the required run rate, and despite a valiant effort from their lower order, they were eventually bowled out for 87 in the 19th over giving St Paul's a comfortable victory by 92 runs.
