June Clifford Silver Award for Matthew Chanwai
Matthew Chanwai (Year 11) has been awarded the prestigious June Clifford Silver Award at the 2021 NZCT Chamber Music Contest, a nationwide chamber music competition for New Zealand’s best secondary school musicians.
Held over August 6 and 7, Matthew was a cellist in the trio Menotti, which included pianist Audrey Guo and cellist Junghwan Choi from Westlake Girls High School and Rangitoto High School respectively. They performed Suite for Two Cellos and Piano by Gian Carlo Menotti.
The trio first played together in the Auckland District preliminary round in June, against 70 other groups, after which they earned a place in the Auckland District Finals. From here, they progressed further to be awarded a place in the Northern Regional Finals and Menotti was named one of 12 national semi-finalists from over 300 groups.
