Kapa Haka by St Paul's Collegiate School

St Paul's Kapa Haka perform at Turangawaewae Regatta

Five outstanding members of the St Paul's Collegiate School Kapa Haka group performed at the 129th annual Turangawaewae Regatta in Ngaaruawahia on Saturday 16 March.

Caitlyn HapeMillie WhetuLachyn Moeke, Te Kokoru Thompson-Evans and Jake Wickham stood proudly amongst te kapa o Te Maurea Whiritoi (Hamilton Girls' High and Hamilton Boys' High School group) who so generously opened their doors to our group, on the main stage at Turangawaewae Marae in front of many whaanau, friends and the Maaori King.

I am extremely proud of each kaihaka (performer) who represented their whaanau and themselves with pride on and off the stage. Seeing our students step out of their comfort zones by entering a new space and embracing a new level of kapa haka has reminded me of the beauty of connection and the importance of nurturing the natural gifts that each individual has. Our students and their peers committed to many hours of practice every week this term, learning a total of six Maaori kapa haka items, connecting with other students and gaining more skills and a passion for Maaori performing arts.

Not only have our students gained a lot from this new opportunity, but I have grown a deeper appreciation for our Maaori culture and the vast opportunities that are available and accessible to our students and whaanau. Through introducing our students to a new level of kapa haka (that they reached and exceeded) and witnessing their determination and drive towards this kaupapa (initiative), I believe kapa haka will continue to flourish at St Paul's Collegiate School in the hands of our leaders of tomorrow.
