Matthew Chanwai selected to perform at prestigious Carnegie Hall

Matthew Chanwai (Year 11) has recently won an award which earned him a place to perform as a solo cellist at Carnegie Hall in New York, one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world.

Matthew has been awarded Second Place Winner in the 15-18 Years (Intermediate) Category at the American Protege International Piano and Stings Competition 2021.

The American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition is open to school students and adults of all nationalities and countries. A large number of talented musicians applied for this year’s Piano and Strings Competition. They hailed from 15 countries, including different parts of the U.S., Australia, China, Costa Rica, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Thailand and Vietnam.

This is the second time Matthew has been awarded a prize in this competition. In 2019 when he was 13 years old, he was named Second Place Winner in the 11-14 Years (Junior) Category. Matthew travelled to New York and had the experience of a lifetime performing at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.
