Matthew Chanwai and Gedalge Trio place third

After two months of preliminary rounds and intense competition, Matthew Chanwai (Year 12) and his chamber music group Gedalge Trio was named the recipients of the Joan Kerr National Third Place Award at the New Zealand NZCT Chamber Music Contest 2022 National Finals held at the Auckland Town Hall on Saturday 6 August.

From a field of 1130 students representing 320 ensembles across New Zealand, 36 groups were chosen to compete in the Regional Competitions. Gedalge Trio was awarded second Place at the Northern Regionals held in Auckland and this earned them a place to be on the prestigious stage for the National Finals, one of only eight groups and receiving the June Clifford National Finalist Award.

Comprised of Matthew on the cello, Lorna Zhang from Macleans College on the violin, and Audrey Guo from Westlake Girls’ High School on the piano, they were deservingly awarded the top group in the North Island and overall third in New Zealand.
