First XI Hockey Boys compete for Worner Shield

From 23-25 July, the First XI boys' hockey team travelled to Christchurch to play the final three games of the Worner Shield. With one win and one loss so far in the competition, the boys were keen to build some momentum heading into Term 3.

  • Game one: Playing against Christchurch Boys' High School, the boys started slowly and found themselves down 2-0 after the first quarter. The game was then a close affair until Christchurch Boys' were able to extend their lead to 3-0 early in the fourth quarter. Pleasingly, St Paul's fought back with two drag flick goals to Javahn Jones (Year 13). Christchurch Boys' won 3-2.
Man of the match: Javahn Jones
  • Game two: The boys played St Andrew's College, anticipated to be the toughest opponents on the trip. The game was an exciting and even affair with both teams attacking with aggression but both defensive units holding strong. It wasn't until the fourth quarter when the deadlock was broken by a clinical St Andrew's attack. Despite the final score being a 1-0 loss, St Paul's recognised the quality of the performance we put out.
Man of the match: Benjamin Allen (Year 13)
  • Game three: The final match against Christ's College meant tired legs and minds, for St Paul's. Christ's were the better team from the start and were rewarded with two first-half goals. Despite scoring what clearly looked like a legitimate goal on the stroke of halftime, the umpires found reason to disallow the St Paul's goal. This motivated the St Paul's boys to up their game and the second half was far more intense. Some narrow misses from St Paul's meant the score remained 2-0 for most of the game. Late in the fourth quarter, Christ's added a third goal via a penalty corner before Cameron Bird (Year 13) managed St Paul's only goal of the game. The final score was 3-1 to Christ's College.
Man of the match: Quinn Harris (Year 10)

Overall a tough trip for the boys, but plenty learned on the way and more opportunities to improve.  A variety of photos taken over the 2022 season below.  And last night a massive win against HBHS of 5-1 has seen this term start with a solid performance!!
