St Peter's daily roundup

St Peter's, Cambridge —

There is much to celebrate as our students busy themselves with many extended learning opportunities. Read about it here.

Operation Christmas Child: In another example of the generosity of our community, this Term, 45 Learning Groups have participated in sourcing items to fill boxes with goodies destined for children in need in the Pacific region.

Currently, there are 80 boxes in circulation, with St Peter’s students shopping for school supplies, personal care items, clothing, and a "wow" item for a child of the gender and year group they have selected. Once all the boxes have been compiled, they will be donated to the Samaritan’s Purse Charity by Week 10.

Refugee Youth Programme: A dedicated group of Year 12 and 13 students have devoted their time and care to others at the Hamilton Refugee Orientation Centre this year. The centre aims to welcome and empower refugees to thrive in New Zealand by facilitating integration into our culture. Students participating in the Refugee Centre Youth Catch-Up Programme are offered a tangible opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Daffodil Day: Last Friday, students proudly wore their Daffodil Day Pins while enjoying a donut at morning tea or lunch, raising $1,034.10 for the Cancer Society, one of our main charities. Thank you to everyone for their support.

Leadership Academy: Year 13 St Peter’s leadership students joined peers from 22 schools across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty at the University of Waikato’s Management School (WMS) Leadership Academy Summit Day recently, which marked the final segment of the 2023 programme. The students tackled a surprise challenge by building bikes for young migrants and refugees, establishing New Zealand as their home.

They also attended a session with Dr Manada Williamson about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it can enhance productivity. The WMS Leadership Academy programme runs throughout the year, with most of the learning happening in Term 2. To learn more – click here.

Winter Tournament: Week 7 saw St Peter’s sporting teams compete in the annual Secondary School New Zealand (SSNZ) Winter Tournament Week, participating in five main sporting codes, including basketball, equestrian, hockey, football, netball, rugby, and cycling. Mixed results, indicative of a tournament environment, included a handful of wins and some healthy competition, as well as an excellent display of sportsmanship from our players.

Cambridge Cultural Kapa Haka: St Peter’s Kapa Haka joined schools across Waipa at this week's 2023 Cambridge Cultural Festival. Strong performances by age groups from early childhood to secondary levels were showcased at the Don Rolands Centre at Karapiro. The joint performance featured a united waiata to start the day and scheduled choreographed presentations for each school.

International Students: The international student cohort was treated to a celebration event for the First Day of Spring this week, with Chilli House dumplings and fizzy drinks. The impromptu lunch was a treat as everybody enjoyed the sunshine.
