Winter Tournament Wrap Up
Winter tournament earlier this month saw 182 St Peter’s students, across 14 teams, competing in eight sports all over the country. Below is a snapshot of the week.
Basketball: Girls' senior basketball finished 4th, securing a spot in the national championships in Palmerston North during the Term 3 holiday break. Our junior boys secured two wins from five games, and the senior boys improved with each game, engaging in some incredibly closely contested matches.
Cycling: The St Peter's cycling team achieved podium finishes in multiple age groups and earned the highest point score overall in the U13 and U15 boys' categories.
Equestrian: Our equestrian team competed in Taupo at the North Island Secondary School event, placing 3rd overall in dressage, with many outstanding individual results in show jumping, dressage, and eventing.
Football: In football, our boys had some tough results in Christchurch, and the girls travelled to Taupo, finishing on a high with a 2-0 victory against Rototuna High School. The junior boys had a challenging week competing against very tough opposition.
Hockey: The 1st XI girls' hockey team achieved an 8th-place finish at the Division One Federation Cup – the highest placing in St Peter’s history. It was a tough week for our boys' team in the Division Three Olympic Stick tournament, but they finished strong with a 6-0 win against Lynfield College.
Lacrosse: The Premier Lacrosse girls dominated the first two days of Nationals in Auckland, securing a place in the final against Epsom Girls (EGGS). EGGS won with a golden goal after a hard-fought game with three triple overtimes, and our team finished as runners-up.
Congratulations to Ellyse Ingram, Meg Hazlett, Amelia Rettkowicz, and Keira Hayidakis for being named in the tournament team. Special mention to Amelia Rettkowicz, awarded the tournament's top goal scorer with 23 goals, and Meg Hazlett, who was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. In its first year of nationals, our boys' team had some tight games and outstanding results, claiming bronze in overtime against Morrinsville.
Netball: At UNISS, our netball girls played ten games over five days, winning six of those and finishing in the top eight. The whole team showed skill, determination, and grit. Well done to Kiki for making the Tournament Team.
Rugby: It was an outstanding week of rugby for our U15 team, finishing as runners-up at the Lindisfarne Invitational tournament. They represented St Peter’s with pride and demonstrated outstanding teamwork and effort in every game they played.
That’s a wrap for Winter Tournament Week 2023. It was great to see so much sport happening around the country, and congratulations to all students involved.
