SPICE of the Week
Welcome to our new weekly article highlighting SPICES.....
SPICES: Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Cultural, Emotional, Social are incredibly important to us at St Teresa's School. They show what we value in educating the whole child. Each week different teachers will share with you what they are seeing around the school. Through this you will be able to see the richness in the learning that is happening.
Check out this week's highlight!....
Oh the places we can go! Te Whakapono have been busy with train sets this term. Zachary recently returned from a trip overseas where he travelled on both an over and underground train. This helped to stem an interest in the train sets here.
Our in-house engineers built tracks to New York and London. They needed to take apart and rebuild to make sure the tracks did not meet, ensuring a safe journey for all. Every time I came back to the group, the tracks looked different as they had used their maths brains to come up with a better route that would enable them to build other routes around it. They realised that using bridges could help also, creating another level to help the trains pass.
Activities like these during play block encourage children to use their maths skills and problem solving strategies. It used language specific to the topic of transport and encouraged group work. All aboard the play train!
SPICE: Intellectual - Making Connections: I am able to make connections in my learning. Applying what I have learned in the past to create working theories. I can share these theories with others. I am happy to change my thinking or theories if new learning suggests I should do so.
