The season of Lent has begun.

Kath Joblin —

We are preparing for Easter Sunday/Resurrection Sunday, the most important day in our Christian calendar. Last week our school participated in a special liturgy for Ash Wednesday.

One of the actions our children have been learning about are the Lenten promises. They think carefully about one thing that they can give up for 40 days - and this teaches the meaning of commitment, sacrifice and the strength of our willpower. It also signals the way we are going to make changes in our lives and be more like Jesus.

Pope Francis has sent a thoughtful reflection on what to do during Lent. He talks about fasting in words which we can all relate. When believers receive the ashes on their foreheads the priest makes the sign of the cross and says "turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospels". Again we are reminded to make positive choices in our lives and to focus on the important things that bring us closer to God.
