Year 4 stewards of the garden

Kath Joblin —

Last week, when the Paua team were enjoying the native bush at their Kaimai camp, the students from Kina 4 were asked to take care of the school gardens- and they did a great job.

Each day a group of Kina 4 students watered the gardens and there were gardeners on hand to weed and mulch. On Thursday our PiPS tutor Tessa came into school to encourage and plan with the gardeners. One of the things about being a gardener is that you need to taste one new thing a week...to get familiar with the many herbs and plants we are cultivating at STM.

It's amazing how fresh everything is - better than the supermarket vegies. We have three citrus trees planted in our garden area that will begin producing lemons, mandarins and limes next year.

Katie Horrocks grows strawberries behind the school sports shed and they are being enjoyed by the junior school during lunchtimes and interval. The fruit trees that Katie started espaliering three years ago are getting stronger and stronger- lots of blossoms promise a good harvest next year.
