We need one more nomination for our school board - what about you?

Kath Joblin —

Nominations close on Wednesday 3rd August.

People think that joining the school board will mean lots of extra work and long meetings - that's not true at St.Thomas More.

We have two meetings a term and each meeting is 1 1/2 - 2 hours long at most.

The meetings are chaired by Paul Cooney and we run our meetings like a get together rather than being official with lots of meeting rules.

The work is done by the Principal ( who is CEO of the board) and the members of the board are there to give support and encouragement; to ask questions to clarify what is happening and to plan for next steps.

The principal is expected to follow Ministry of Education guidelines and to meet the expectations set down for the progress and achievement of learners. Reports are submitted to the Ministry of Education throughout the year - student data, annual plans/action plans, strategic plan, audits, reviews and more.

The board has three members who are chosen by Bishop Steve - Sue Carnachan, Natalie Smyth and Father Matt. This is the difference with state schools who have a much smaller board - a state school board has the elected parent reps and the staff rep.

Our elected parent reps are : Bruce Mennie, Paul Cooney, Clare Wilson and Natalie Fleming.

Clare is resigning in September because she is also on the board at Suzanne Aubert Catholic School as a Bishop's appointee and so there are twice as many meetings to go to right now with two schools involved.

We have had an excellent audit for 2020 and the 2021 audit is in process without any problems.

ERO are very happy with the way our school is progressing.

The Catholic Character review at the start of the year was also glowing.

So our board is in a very good position and now is the time to join up - as a newbie you will have lots of experienced people around you to support you.

Please consider asking someone to nominate you - it could be your partner, they can nominate you!
