Why is pounamu so special?
Our Year 2 children have been making their own greenstone necklaces as part of an integrated art and culture study.
Miss Fielden has created a beautiful display of greenstone artworks which can be viewed in the school office. Parents and visitors to the school can admire the pounamu and learn about their meanings.
Using modelling clay each child chose a design which reflected their own personality. By crafting the symbols and then painting them the children were able to create very realistic artworks. They also learned about the sacredness of pounamu and how each necklace has a special significance to the person who wears it. We all know that pounamu is blessed and gifted to you- it has a lifeforce of its own (mauri).
