Wonderful Wai, a House of Science discovery box!

Kath Joblin —

This week our House of Science box was focused on new learning about the qualities of water. This term our big ideas centre on how we care for the beautiful planet God created. We are kaitiaki of flora and fauna - it is our role to be stewards and protectors.

This week is Laudate Si week - Laudate Si is the name of a very important essay written by Pope Francis which calls for all of us to be stewards and protectors of God's creation.

We are all aware of the changing cycles and evidence of unprecedented  extremes in our weather.

Pipi 1 and Kina buddied up to do a science experiment from the House of Science on the topic of Wonderful Wai.

Each pair had a sheet of waxed paper. They each had a drop of water they had to blow through a straw and race each other from the start to the finish line. Here are some of the observations from these budding scientists:

  • the water drops did not soak into the paper like it usually does
  • when the red and green coloured water drops collided with each other, the two colours made brown
  • if you blow through the straw with too much force, the water droplet splits into several small bubbles and it makes it too difficult to get your bubble to the finish line.
