Surfing reporter - Asha “Girls go surfing” Matthews.
On the 25th of March Paua girls were lucky to be on a "Mums and girls" surfing trip. This is the first time our school has been able to arrange a day like this - really special.
Firstly we got into our groups at school and I was lucky to travel with Skye and her mum. On the way we enjoyed listening to music on the radio. In twenty minutes we reached the Hibiscus surf school trailer located beside the main beach. We met up with Tessa and 4 surfing instructors. After they introduced themselves we got the surf boards out of the trailer. We were given a wetsuit to use. Putting them on was very hard. Next we got in a line, tallest to shortest, and we got to choose our surfboards.
We walked the surfboards down to the edge of the sand. Our instructor showed us the steps to surfing: paddle, turn around to see if the surf is coming, chicken arms, then stand up, and you're surfing!! We had to drag the surfboard down to the ocean and that's when I really felt excited.
The 4 instructors and Tessa were helping us to catch a wave. We had to keep moving to the left because on our right there were rocks and rips. The first time I tried to stand up I fell off but the second time I succeeded. Most of the time I succeeded but occasionally I failed - that’s how you learn and get better. After we had done around 2 hours we put our surfboards away and had a swim. It was amazing being able to relax and enjoy the waves. One of the instructors blew the whistle, which means it's time to come out. Tessa took us to the changing rooms where we got changed before enjoying some lunch.
After lunch we went back to school and met up with everyone else. Thank you Chloe, Katie, Nichole, Sha, Mrs Thomas, Tessa and the cool instructors from Hibiscus Surf school for a fun day out.
