The gardens are producing rainbow carrots and radishes in abundance.

Kath Joblin —

Nina and the Year 5-6 students have been harvesting carrots and radishes today from our school gardens.

It was a shock for some that carrots aren't always orange, that there are purple and yellow ones as well. The taste is more peppery in the purple carrots - often originating in places like Russia. The Dutch were the people who bred orange carrots many years ago and in New Zealand orange is the most common colour for carrots in the supermarket.

Gardening club is a great opportunity to learn a bit of history and a bit of biology and a bit of economics or business studies. Who would believe that so much could be learned from planting a seed.
