Science with Matua Liam

Kath Joblin —

Year 2+3 are very fortunate to have Liam Robson in their class one day a week as part of his practical study for a teaching degree.

Liam was a foundation pupil at St. Thomas More 21 years ago - he started in Miss Joblin's class (Year 2/3). Liam went on to Aquinas College and has studied as an electrician, a radio broadcaster and he worked in our school as a teacher aide. Now Liam has found his real calling as a teacher.

This week Matua Liam has been introducing science concepts including the power of air, creating a balloon rocket and experimenting with compression.

Year 2+3 had a lot of fun experimenting with balloons - the unpredictability of force and direction made for a lot of laughs!

Whenever I visit Aquinas College I reflect on the number of students from our school represented in science in their upper school, especially girls.

Our focus on science - which began back in 2004- has given so many Aquinas graduates the passion for scientific discovery in the last ten years. The number of scholarships our students have been awarded in the sciences has continued to grow. This is so important in terms of study and finding jobs in the future. The only thing holding other learners back is lack of confidence in maths and the sciences. Confidence in maths and the sciences is something that our St Thomas More graduates all have!
