Ash Wednesday

Stephen Kennedy —

Every year we celebrate Easter - Christ’s death and resurrection.

Lent is about preparing for Easter

E te whanau a te Karaiti / Dear friends in Christ,

Wednesday marked the start of the season of Lent. The tradition of Lent started with people seeing connections.

We are connected to God, we are connected to each other, we are connected to the land. But sometimes the connections break. Lent is about preparing ourselves to reconnect with the resurrected Jesus.

Here in NZ it’s pretty much autumn now. Autumn is a season of change and so some people see Lent as a time of death and sacrifice. They give something up to remind themselves of how Jesus sacrificed Himself for us.

But the word “Lent” actually means Spring, the season of new life. In the northern hemisphere it’s Spring time now… some people see Lent as a time of renewal. It might be time to ‘control-alt-delete’ the things that hold us back from being a great person. At our liturgy we talked to the students about how if I’m a better man, I’ll better connect with those around me.

Yours in Christ
