12 PEO Bike Trips

Chris Leader —

Over the past term the Year 12 outdoor education class have been completing several mountain biking trips as part of their course units for the year. More specifically this has included simple tracks out in Mc Cleans Island, Haswell Quarry, Mt Victoria and several tracks around the Port Hills. The class have found the trips challenging but enjoyable experiences too. A key learning of this mountain biking unit has been the preparation, maintenance and safety of biking and mountain biking trips. The boys were to complete these various tracks around Christchurch which were beginner, intermediate and expert level tracks. At the same time, the boys were expected to be able to fix and maintain the bike throughout the trip. So this meant puncture repairs and chain maintenance.

One highlight of the trip was the journey up to Sugar Loaf this week. The track was a tough bike ride from the Rapaki track around the crater rim and halting at the top of Mt Victoria. From here the boys completed the downhill track which included several sharp turns, rocky terrain and steep falls, which led to a number of the boys falling off. Most significantly Thomas New and Korbin Moir took some big falls into surrounding native New Zealand bush.

Well done to all the men who took part in the mountain biking trips. The weather didn’t play nicely with us and it was a tough unit to complete, however an enjoyable experience to have been a part of.
