Health and Physical Education Department Report 2018

2018 has been an action-packed year in the Health and Physical Education learning area! The hauora (well-being) of our young men has been at the forefront of our thinking as our staff design and deliver programmes that are meaningful in their journey towards manhood in this dynamic 21st century.

It has been a year of positive challenge and innovation with a new junior curriculum introduced at years 7-9. The connected (Kinesiology) and select programmes of 2018 have provided our learners with a range of valuable experiences, incorporating game elements and mechanics. Highlights in the junior programmes for our students this year have included – Year 7 Camp in Hanmer, Ki o Rahi, Year 9 camp at Orton Bradley Park, Fifa Football World Cup, Year 10 Camp at Boyle river and school community-based well-being initiatives.

The senior Health and Physical Education curriculum has strived to meet the varying needs of our young men whether they choose the NCEA Health and PE, Fitness, Sports Leadership or Outdoor Education pathways. Highlights of the senior programmes for our students this year have included – Leadership on junior camps, outdoor education trips, biophysical principles through badminton, sports coaching of junior students.

The experience gained in the various activities and challenges offered this year have helped develop well-rounded lifelong learners who will make positive contributions in the wider community. Next year we are excited about the opportunities for our senior courses to evolve along with the introduction of the NCEA Level 1 Sport Science class will feature a collaboration with the Science faculty to deliver a course that immerses the students in scientific content using sporting and movement contexts.
