Ben Crosson – "Teacher by day rocker by night!"

Phelix Woods —

Who is Ben Crosson?

Unless one of your subjects you chose is music you might not know this man. He heads the music department here at St Thomas’s and teaches all years from year 7 to 13. He teaches students the basics of music theory and how to apply it to your own creations. But there’s much more to this man that meets the eye and I’m here to tell you all about him.

Mr Crosson loves working here at St Thomas’s but when he finishes a hard day at work and goes home there’s nothing, he loves more than cracking open an iced cold hazy IPA. He also enjoys playing guitar and jamming, along with getting his hands dirty working away at cars and engines, especially his recent addition to his garage, an old school 1980s Ford Falcon Ute. He’s also a big family man and loves to spend time with his daughters and partner.

Before teaching in his early 20’s Mr Crosson was in several bands all originals, performing in pubs at weddings or for anyone who’d have them on. They’d use the money made performing and invest it into studio sessions and recording their music. He said as much fun as that was, there is little to no room to make money in that industry, so he also had to work another job which was working a help desk at a distribution centre. He enjoyed that job and loved the people working around him, but he knew that job had little potential and there wasn’t much opportunity for promotion. He realised to move forward with his life he was going to have to challenge himself and his partner at the time helped influence him to take on teachers’ college at the age of 30.

Richard Washington gave Mr Crosson the call to come work at St Thomas’s selling him how great this school was, harping on about how great the school was doing and what St Thomas’s was about. Mr Crosson was intrigued and keen to try something different and face a new challenge. He said, “I was a little bit upset with Richard when I got here but I haven’t looked back since settling in and probably wouldn’t want to work anywhere else”. He loves the people he works with; he thinks the staff are awesome and although the students can be a bit challenging at times, he loves watching the boys evolve and mature into young men throughout the years to when they can become slightly bearable!
