"64 squares every Thursday"

The Saint Thomas of Canterbury College Chess Club (STCCCC) spent a very enjoyable year in each other’s company sparing over 64 squares every Thursday after school. There was a strong commitment from the students involved which gave us the opportunity to experience different abilities and styles of play.

Matthew Cross finished the year at the top of the ladder thanks to his consistent approach and lack of ‘blunders’. Ethan Thorburn’s tenacity and never die attitude needs to be commended as he was always resolved to force his opponent to administer the coup de grâce despite overwhelming odds.

A Bruce Challenge midway through the year brought about ‘peak-chess’ at St Thomas with the four Houses vying for precious points, with Joyce taking out the honours. A dozen games were played across the year levels and we hope to attract some of the talent that was on display for next year.
