Music HOD Report

Ben Crosson —

A vibrant year for the STC Music department.

2018 Report

During terms one and two, STC and Villa Maria College put on a combined production called High School Musical. The show was directed by Ms Angela Smith and employed the services of some of our most talented singers, actors, dancers and musicians. The Showband produced some superb performances night after night, reward for putting in a lot of rehearsal time behind the scenes. A special mention must go to Brian Knopp for his expertise on piano, Johvaan Renata – Bass, Sam Gilzean – Drums, Bowen Hodgson – Guitar, Jack Taylor – Guitar, Andriano Bernal - Keyboard

STC Funk band

Staging an event like High School Musical has duel benefits and, in this case, it became a testing ground for the School funk band. The show provided a ‘trial by fire’ platform for students to learn to read charts, turn up to rehearsals on time, follow instructions and respond to constructive criticism, all of which are valuable traits of performance musicians. The STC Funk band emerged from the core musicians in the show and they can regularly be heard playing songs like ‘Sir Duke and ‘Another Brick in The Wall’. The most valuable player and driving force behind this group is Johvaan Renata and we look forward to his return to the music room as a year 13 leader in 2019.

Junior Music

The Junior Music Program has been a buzz this year with a string of dynamic performances from varying corners of the school. Passion for the Performing Arts is alive and well with many students jumping at the chance to showcase their skills throughout the year. This year saw the inclusion of a year 9 production class which provided opportunities for students to successfully experience many different aspects of the performing arts including two showcase performances.
