Super Touch

Brendan Biggs —

The team features a good mix of youth and experience and have been very lucky to call on the leadership of old boy Jonny Van Der Velde as head coach.

Super Touch Report

2016 was our most successful year since going to nationals in 2013, achieving many goals throughout. Although we didn’t perform as we should have at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Competition, disappointingly finishing 5th, Touch New Zealand gave us the wild card entry to the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament after thrashing St Andrews 13-0.

At the South Islands we played like the team we were capable of being ... finishing in 5th position and only losing to Christchurch Boys High who had made top 4 in the National Secondary Schools Competition and Kings High School. With this result it meant that we were the fifth best team in the South Island and second best team in Christchurch.

2016 was also the last season for two of our most experienced and successful members, being the last of that 2013 team that went to nationals. Tane Wallace and Luke Payne have been playing for over 4 years and have put so much time into touch, helping it grow immensely within the school. I would just like to say on behalf of all our super touch members farewell to these two men, we wish you the best in your journeys and thank you for all that you have done for the team. Also a big thanks to Johnny Van der Velde, Harrison Kirk and Philip Vaifale for coaching this season and Andrew Auimatagi for managing and supporting us. Bring on Nationals 2017.
