Health and Physical Education Department Report

2017 was a year of significant change for Health and Physical Education at the college in many ways. The opening of the Waterford High Performance Centre marked an exciting step for not only our curriculum area, but also sport at the college as we strive to make our mark on the national stage. The new facility provides opportunities for our students to realise their sporting potential, reach for their dreams and develop holistically in a student-centred learning environment.

We are very fortunate to have maintained an exceptional team of educators within our Health and Physical Education department. Talented and passionate teachers, coaches and mentors who share their knowledge and guide our young men in their learning. This year we were very lucky to add Mr Johnny Leo’o (Ex-professional rugby player) to our team, who has made a massive impact as a teacher of Exercise Science and 1st XV Rugby Coach. Mr Leo’o has also overseen the development of our impressive weights room as we look to develop bigger, faster and stronger performing sporting athletes at the college.

Health, Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Sports Leadership continue to provide valuable learning experiences for our learners as they develop into the best versions of themselves both inside and outside of the classroom. Specific content related courses such as Elite Sport, Exercise Science and Fitness Development also remain very popular catering to the needs of our gifted and talented sportsmen and those wishing to pursue a career in the Sports and Fitness industries.

This year our Health and Physical Education department has put a strong focus on making the Key Competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum more relatable to our young men. Equipping our students with these competencies/skills is vital as we look to continue creating more meaningful real-world learning experiences in 2018 and beyond. As a department we are very excited about the new changes happening across the junior curriculum next year and we will be looking to take learning to the next level once again at St Thomas’s.

Mā te rongo, ka mōhio;

Mā te mōhio, ka mārama;

Mā te mārama, ka mātau;

Mā te mātau, ka ora.

From listening comes knowledge;

From knowledge comes understanding;

From understanding comes wisdom;

From wisdom comes well-being.
