MCLC tutor group report 2017

Once again it was a great year to be part of the winning house McClintock..We were pleased to have Ben Redmond as our sole Year 13 student and leader. He provided much support to me and the group taking rolls and mentoring and being a role model for the younger students. As usual we tried to get in as many fun activities as we could even though Mrs C tried to inject some serious topics for mentoring from time to time. These included goal setting and discussing biweeklies and academic progress, progress or lack of with NCEA and reasons for absences. I hope these little chats were useful.

Mentoring interviews proved invaluable in connecting with families and sharing information and

The group were always keen to do anything involving food and so we had a few Fridays with a food theme: pizzas are a perennial favourite and icecream. Having a shared lunch was always a disaster as very few remembered and others who did thought we should subsist on a diet of chips and soft drinks in the main.

We also did some great work for community service, opting to once again on the fair day to run a popcorn and drinks stall. It was a valuable lesson to the boys to realise that if you help yourself to the merchandise or help your friends to it – it eats into your profits substantially as you still have to pay for your overheads!!!

During the year our group shrank as we farewelled Todd Mayo to a life beyond the school gates and Will Hendry became a very part time member of the group as he was at Ara two days a week.

For the end of the year we went to Ten Pin bowling again which was a great success and Peter Mainwaring triumphed again. He was given a Bowling pin in recognition.

As 2017 closes we say farewell to Ben and also to Jamie Watson. Mrs Collins is also leaving as she is retiring at the end of the year. 2018 will be a year of change : Next year’s mentoring group will have a new name, new students, a new mentor, a new time for mentoring and an exciting new focus on making mentoring the key to student welfare and achievement at STC.

I wish all the boys the best for the future and look forward to seeing you and hearing about your achievements
