RICE - Leader's Report

Ash Reihana —

RICE HOUSE - by Ash Reihana

Special Character week started out slow for Rice House. The boys had been doing once weekly practices for most of the term, but the real work was started on the Monday. Like every year with a lot of new boys participating in Special Character events, it was new for them all. The boys had a really good feeling about our songs, and was definitely our strength compared to the haka. Working towards Friday, the many practices throughout the week were largely beneficial and was where most of our work was done.

Throughout our practices the boys had probably been mucking around a bit too much and stretched us for time in the final week. Despite this, the boys covered a lot between Monday and Thursday. We perfected our songs as best we possibly could and gave our Haka "a good crack". Going in to the Friday I felt that if the boys were on point with our house song, constructed by the year 13s, and the religious song was sung well, then we could have a good crack at taking maximum points in the singing competing.

The singing competition went well, and after hearing the other houses, I felt our was definitely one of the best sung, and had nice sound, but not necessarily the loudest. Upon returning from Lunch, waiting for the points to be announced, we were stoked to find we were in the top 2 for singing but had unfortunately lost out to Joyce. In saying that, we were more than happy with 2nd and it gave us a fair few points. This left the Haka competition as the last event of the day.

The boys knew that whatever happened on the day, would determine where we ended up. Although we wanted to win, after seeing the quality performances of the other houses I knew we were in trouble. This became reality when the points were announced and we were in 4th place. Although the boys gave it a good crack, it just wasn’t our day, but we took some points from the singing and we hope to try and pull in Marlow and McClintock come the end of year results.
