World Youth Day

Thomas Newton and Stephen Kennedy —

Patrick Hansen, Ben Topham, Earl Baua, Luke Payne, Ben O'Connell, Joseph Spijkerman and Francis Verbo, along with Mr Newton and Mr Kennedy made a trip to Villa Maria College.

The students returned on foot with the Youth Day Cross carrying the massive crucifix down Yaldhurst Road along with some helpful students from Villa.

The cross is a part of the World Youth Day festival. This festival, initiated under Pope John Paul II, is a celebration of Catholic youth and leadership. This year the festival is being held in Poland. Because of the distance and financial constraints of trying to get to Poland, Marian College and Catholic Cathedral College will be hosting their own festival for year 12 and 13 students across the South Island dioceses.

The cross has been travelling around the South Island Catholic schools to help raise awareness and promote the festival. It will be at St Thomas's for the week before travelling over the Alps to John Paul II College on the West Coast.
