First XV 2015 - Backs Report

Backs Report

This year’s key area of focus for the 1st XV backline was consistency of performance. In essence being able to do the basics under pressure. Strong individual performances have always existed for St Thomas' rugby teams so the focus this year was to support one another and collectively play rugby with a high level of efficiency. In many games we were able to do this. A tight game against Christs resulted in a 25 all draw, strong and direct running allowed a fantastic victory in Timaru against Timaru boys high.

We were competitive against some strong teams such as Nelson College and deserved a win if not for a late penalty against Marlbourgh boys. Work rate was always evident for Will Bartels and he was often clinical under the high ball. Harry Kirk in his new position of halfback did some excellent things (also selected in the crusaders junior knights’ team). Patrick Elia made some key plays and will be an important member for the next few years in the backline for STC. Moresby Peseta was the back bone of our defence and made some game changing tackles in big games. Mahonri Tauilli-Pau was dangerous with ball in hand, often breaking through the first tackle line. 7 wins and a draw cannot be underestimated in this increasingly tough competition. 2016 will, like every year be tough and unforgiving. The backline will continue to strive for excellence. The boys can be proud of their performances in the 1st XV jersey this year.
