STC Gets 3rd Placing at South Island Secondary Schools’ Softball Championships, and Two players selected for NZ!

Brendan Biggs —

After losing our first 3 games and our Captain Ash Reihana to an injured knee, our team could have turned up their toes and given up at the South Island Secondary School Champs but they showed true intestinal fortitude winning their remaining round robin games to finish 3rd, our best finish since winning in 2010.

Our last game of the round was a must win match to qualify for the semi finals. As the rain started sweeping in on the wind from Antarctica, we faced off against Otago BHS who had beaten Southland BHS 17-2, whom we had just lost to 6-7.

At their first turn at bat Otago scored 5 runs, including 2 home runs. Already soaked, our team could have given up, but led by Caleb Stewart they fought back with the bat, levelling the score at 5 all. By the end of the match Caleb had struck out the two batters who had hit homers to win his individual battle, and our side triumphed 12-6.

Congratulations to Ash Reihana who was selected for the Emerging Sox (NZ U17) team to compete in the Friendship Games this June-July in Sydney Australia, and to Caleb Stewart who was been selected for the Developing Sox (NZ U15), who competed in the series against the Aussie Sparks in Hamilton, and will travel to the Queensland State Championships in MacKay later in 2016.
