Manawa at its best!

Blair Scadden —

In February the STC Coast to Coast Team put their metal to the test on arguably NZ’s most iconic multi sport course.

Alex McCorkindale, Callum Sullivan Roberts and Liam O’Donnell spent two days crossing the South Island from Kumara Beach on the west coast, to New Brighton Beach on the east coast. The race covers 243km on some of the most stunning scenery the South Island has to offer.

On Friday, Liam got the team off to a flying start with a 2km run off the beach to his bike. He then cycled 55km to the first transition at Aickens. It was then Alex’s turn to complete the 30km mountain run up the Deception River and over Goats Pass. There had been a significant amount of rain leading up to the event so conditions were tricky to say the least. The boys ended the first day in 4th position in the school's category. On Saturday, Liam started off cycling from Klondyke Corner to Mt White bridge for the kayak section. He rode very well completing the 15km sprint in 30 minutes. Callum was up next with a 70km paddle down the mighty Waimakariri River to Gorge Bridge, just outside Sheffield. He did an excellent job navigating along the river, a stage where a number of competitors pull out every year. Liam was once again called on to bring the team home completing the 70 km cycle back into town. Once again he cycled very well and the boys arrived at the finish line completing the race in 15hr 45mins. Well done boys you have represented yourselves, your family and the STC family with Manawa.
