Whip crack away, whip crack away, whip crack away!

This week, senior students from Villa Maria College and St. Thomas of Canterbury College took on the musical "Calamity Jane!", filled with gunfights, romance, comedy and, of course, music! Set in the lowly South Dakota town of Deadwood, these young men and women have been rehearsing three times a week to bring this performance to the stage

Oscar Sergel-Stringer (Year 12) had the audience in hysterics as Francis Fryer, an actor from back East who's forced to dress as a woman singing "Hive Full of Honey" for the stubborn Millie Miller (Lucy Boyle, Year 13) who was promised an actress! Aaron Sim (Year 13) had the audience swooning as he played Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin, who falls head over heels in love with Katie Brown (Kate Stokes, Year 12), a "wanna-be" star from back East. The two sung the ballad "Love You Dearly", all while the other third of the love-triangle was hidden backstage. Wild Bill Hickok (Paddy Hansen, Year 13) kept the audience on their feet with his snappy comebacks to Calamity Jane, but showed the audience his inner self in the song "Higher than a Hawk", where he confesses his love for Katie Brown, which creates all sorts of trouble for the small western town.

Throughout all of this, Calamity Jane (Julia Curnow, Year 12) tries to save the Deadwood theatre from rioting as she travels to Chicago to bring back Adelaide Adams, the most famous actress in the world. As you'll see, this doesn't go exactly to plan, and creates all sorts of drama as Calamity begins to pursue her love for Danny.

This show is one full of energy, hilarity and passion, and cannot be missed! The show closes tomorrow night (Saturday, 20th May) at Villa Maria College auditiorium, with tickets selling at $10 for students, $20 for adults. Make sure you get your tickets before it all sells out!
