Rugby - Under 12 Coaches' Report

Steve Hart —

The 2016 U12 completed a successful season. After completing and pleasing pre-season working hard on our fitness and strength, we struck early success beating Rolleston U12 convincingly, we marched onto our next pre-season against a big and older U13 West Melton team that we struggled to compete with.

These early pre-season games did give us plenty of confidence going into the grading games winning 2 of the 3 games. this had us placed in section 1 which was good reward for a well worked pre-season. The level of rugby was tough and uncompromising but our boys stuck to the task with highlights being victories against Burnside, Marist Albion, HSOB, and a draw against Sydenham. This had a finish 5th overall.

The major highlight was actually a game we lost against Christchurch Black a team we had lost to earlier in the by 50 points, the boys showed how much they had improved throughout the season by unluckily losing 12-15. The boys really came of age in this game and really showed how coachable they were.

The Season finished with a end of season tournament in Queenstown. The boys had a great day 1 winning both games to earn a spot in the semi-finals. Day 2 bought on a semi-final against the Brothers club from Brisbane in what was a cracker of a game we came up short 5-7 with boys fighting right to the end we didn't lose we just ran out of time! In closing this was an excellent group of boys to work with they improved as rugby players and as young men.

The future of rugby at St Thomas is in good hands. I big thank you to My Paul Donnelly our tireless manager and Pete McCorkindale who assisted with coaching, and also to all of the parents it was pleasure working with you and your sons.
