Michael Callaghan

Former student and St Thomas Dux, Michael Callaghan, graduated last year with a Bachelor of Commerce with First Class Honours in economics and finance, after four years of study at the University of Canterbury.

In April this year he was awarded the Best NZ Economics Honours Dissertation for 2016 by the NZ Association of Economics. Michael is the first recipient of the new award which is presented to the student who is judged to have written the best Economics paper during their Honours year at a New Zealand university.

After finishing his degree, Michael completed a six months exchange in Germany at a finance university and then spent last summer backpacking through South America. He has now been employed as a Market Analyst for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.
