Board of Trustees - Pen Portraits

Brendan Biggs —

My name is Dominic Dravitzki. Nicky and I have one son currently attending St Thomas with another who finished year 13 in 2015 (and the youngest a couple of years away!). I support the underlying Edmund Rice and social justice based philosophy of the School and I wish to develop and promote that. Nicky and I also believe in the value of a close connection between home and school and to that end Nicky is actively involved in the Parents and Friends Association. I attended St Thomas’ from 1979 to 1985 and believe I bring some knowledge of the School’s history and “backstory” as an Old Boy on the Board. Professionally I am a Solicitor in private practice specialising in all areas of family law but also with a broad general practice.

My name is Kerry Russell, educated at St Bernard’s College Lower Hutt and the University of Canterbury completing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2012. I recently joined Assure Quality as General Manager International Nutrition having been with Westland Milk Products for 7 years. My son (Finnian) will be completing his journey at St Thomas in 2015 as a year 13 student. My involvement since 2009 at St Thomas of Canterbury College has been through the coaching of various Rugby age group teams. I joined the Board of Trustees in 2013 to take an active and strategic role in ensuring through the Board of Trustees the on-going improvement of the college.

My name is Gabrielle Moore, I have been at STC since 2009 when my son James Rattray started as a very small year 7 boy and joined that fine house Marlow. I work for the Tertiary Education Union, at the University of Canterbury. Our union represents tertiary sector staff. My partner Alister is an Aircraft Engineer and we also have a daughter Niamh who is at Villa. I love our school and the Social and Restorative philosophy that underpins the Edmond Rice Vision. I support our Principal and staff and this is why I am very proud to be a parent rep on your Board.

My name is Logan McMullen, I’m a happily married man with two young children. My son Caleb attends St Thomas’s, and our daughter attends Villa Maria. I have had a broad range of experience in my life, from serving in the military through to working as a chef and –most recently, I work for ACC New Zealand. I have a lust for challenge and diversity and - by drawing on my broad range of skills developed via life & business experiences, I offer St Thomas’s an individual who is committed to the best interest of the school, its community and preserving the school’s principles. My goal as an elected trustee will always be to ensure that the school continues to be guided by the principles of Edmund Rice; and to ensure that the staff is supported and resourced to best allow them to continue to manage the school so that they can guide our boys in achieving the motto of: "To round off knowledge with manliness".

My name is Penetito Pelenato. I am married to Rebecca & am a father of 6. We have 3 adult & 3 school aged children. We currently have Sebastian attending the College & our sons Stephen & Viane are past pupils. I work for the Dept. of Corrections as a Community Work Supervisor. My role is to encourage and ensure offenders complete their community based sentence. Our family have been part of the St Thomas community since 2001. I was co-opted as a member of the Board in 2010. I am passionate about student achievement in the school with a special emphasis on our Pasifika students. I am part of a Pasifika parents group that meet on a regular basis to look at ways in raising the achievement of our students. At present I belong to St Mary's Pro-Cathedral Parish & am on the Parish Council. I am also the secretary of the Samoan Catholic Community with a responsibility of 27 families & have held the position since 2002.

My name is Michael Bendall. I am an old boy of the College and was College Captain in 2006. I work for Lane Neave, lawyers specialising in dispute resolution and insurance law. I am passionate about the College and its strong social justice philosophy. The College has grown and developed considerably in the time since I left and is well placed for the future. I am personally very proud of the strong Maori and Pasifika community that continues to build within the College and the strong sense of Pride that they have for the College, just as I did when I attended.

E rere kau mai te awa nui nei,Mai I te kaahui maunga ki Tangaroa, Ko au te awa ko te awa ko au. The river flows from the mountain to the sea I am the river and the river is me. ko Ruapehu te Maunga, Aotea te waka,Turi te Tangata, Whanganui te awa, ko Te - Atihaunui-aa Paapaarangi - te iwi. Kia ora My name is Nepia Reweti, I am on the board of trustees as the Maori representative and have been doing so for the past 4 years. I am currently employed as a community supervisor for the department of correction probation. I have two sons who have attended St Thomas of Canterbury College and have one son currently attending who is entering year 12 next year. Since my short time servicing as a Māori representative BOT at STC am grateful for the efforts that have been made possible and the quest for understanding never stops.

My Name is Adam Gallagher. I am a proud old boy of the College, attending from 1984 until 1990. I currently have one son attending and was honoured to be asked to represent the Proprietors on the Board this year. I am a solicitor at Duncan Cotterill Lawyers practising in the areas of employment, health and safety and education law. I have been impressed with the inclusiveness and diversity of the College and the leadership in driving education to meet the needs of our young men and preparing them for life outside school. I look forward to making a positive contribution to the College in the years ahead.

My name is Adrian Els. I have been at St Thomas’ since 2012 arriving as a year 10 student. Upon my arrival at the school, I was astounded by the amount of opportunities that allowed real student involvement in the makeup of the school. I began striving to dedicate my time to serving the school and my peers. Being a Board of Trustees representative in 2015 has given me the opportunity to act as the voice of the students, helping make sure student input is present in discussions revolving the College’s future and the future of the students. I have thoroughly enjoyed representing your sons in 2015.
