Marlow - Special Character Week

Alex Coulthard —

Special Character Week:

As term two approached the focus quickly became special character week and practice for the singing and Haka competition was well underway. The boys put in some solid hours of practice and although it didn’t quite pay off for the singing it certainly did in the Haka competition with the boys producing a passionate but professional Haka sealing another WIN for Marlow.

As term three swung around there was a quiet confidence growing within the house. Maybe 2016 would be Marlow’s year. But the competition was certainly not over as we quickly learned. The house competition had become a two horse race between Mc’Clintock and us. But the boys continued to turn out in numbers to Bruce Challenges and gave generously to the can drive. In the end it wasn’t quite enough as we were pipped just at the line once again by Mc’Clintock in a race, which could’ve gone either way.

There have been some great moments this year. Of course two of the best being winning swimming sports and the haka. But one of the most memorable for me came during the lettuce eating Bruce Challenge. A member of each house was to come forward and eat an entire lettuce, the fastest to eat one being the winner. Not many were keen to take on such as challenge but as usual a brave Marlow man stepped up to the plate. Half way through the lettuce I am sure he regretted putting his hand up in the first place. But after a mid race chunder he managed to down the lettuce. Even though we didn’t win the challenge this young man showed the true spirit of Marlow house. The willingness to give anything a go and the attitude of never giving up.

Although we couldn’t quite walk away with the house cup I am extremely proud of the effort the boys put in this year. It has been an absolute privilege to captain Marlow and I have enjoyed every minute of it. A special thanks goes out to the other Marlow seniors in particular the right hand man Ryan Culham. I honestly don’t think we would have even been in the running for the cup without you boys. Also a big thanks to all the form teachers in particular Mr Newton and Mr Kennedy, You are the foundation of Marlow. The great work you put in is what makes Marlow such a special house to be a part of.

Alex Coulthard signing out.
