Year 13 Sustainability course

Thomas Carroll and Robb Bautista —

For Year 13 Sustainability we traveled with Mr Allen and Mr Lange to the West Coast to study the impacts of Tourism and Mining. On the first day we arrived at Shantytown and we talked with Lisa, Amanda, and Judy who were staff from Shantytown, and local West Coasters. They covered the history of mining and the impacts of both mining and tourism, environmentally and socially. We stayed the night in Hokitika and went into the township and down to the beach. The next day we traveled up to Greymouth and looked at some of the memorials and statues to those lost in mining accidents. We then met with Kevin from West Coast tourism. He was a wealth of knowledge and gave us the opportunity to ask any questions we had about tourism or mining. This helped us gather information that we could use into our assessment. After this we visited the historic Brunner mining site before heading back home. Overall we learnt a lot in the space of two days, which will help us for our research internal.
