Mā te kotahitanga e whai kaha ai tātou
In unity we have strength
As a junior going into the house activities, I remember feeling nervous.
I was nervous and scared of having to put myself out there as a junior in front of the rest of the school.
We were expected to chant loudly and give it all for Joyce house. But what if it wasn’t enough?
The sound that came from being a Joyce man and the support of the brotherhood was enough to settle the nerves.
Looking out over the course of the year there were many sights that I remember. I remember seeing everyone enjoying themselves. The older students were always supporting the younger students with every activity that was on during the year.
Swimming Sports, Athletics Day, Special Character Week, the tiring house practices where we were drilled to learn songs as well as the school haka.
Even though the results might have not gone our way I hope that everyone feels like they have achieved something, because you have. Things that might feel like a waste of time will be teaching you something without you even realising.
Look for the good in everything because everything happens for a reason you just have to find that reason. The amount of influence that you have on someone can be massive so don’t just take care of yourself but take care of others also.
The key thing looking back now as Year 13 is that this time at school is short lived.
These activities will end for us the day we finish at St Thomas’, but these memories will stay with us for a lifetime.
Enjoy these moments, respect those trying to lead you and give St Thomas’ your all. It is worth the ride.
