Joyce Leader's Report

Te Aotahi Rice Edwards —

Te Aotahi's thoughts on 2017

Joyce started the year off strong placing third overall at swimming sports and second at athletics. This was largely due to the fact this year a larger number of boys joined in with events and gave things a go. In other years, it seemed as though Joyce boys would opt out of events and challenges but this year the story was different, everyone was motivated and showed up.

Our juniors carried the team at times often placing first and second in both swimming events and track races and racking up huge points for the team. It was great to see lots of aspiring young Joyce boys get involved with chanting and hyping up their friends, which really helped keep morale high. Our year tens especially, helping around events and aiding where they could.

Throughout the year many boys participated in Bruce Challenges, some were successful and others well not so much. But overall I think the general interest to participate has been apparent this year throughout all year levels.

Special character week. What can I say? The time, the effort, blood, sweat, and tears that were put into this week were astronomical. Often times it was hard to control such a large and loud house group but we somehow managed to pull it off. Joyce house won the singing competition (again), without words or background music and thoroughly destroyed the competition with our sweet renditions of modern songs and even sweeter harmonies. Then we placed 3rd overall in the Haka competition (Because you’re not allowed to win them all apparently). Jokes aside ... the week was a huge success for the College’s culture and spirit, and I hope the tradition will only strengthen and grow as the years progress.

Although we only achieved 2nd place overall for the year, I would argue that this has been one of Joyce’s best years in recent memory, if not the best. I’m proud of the boys who donned the mighty red colors this year and I’m especially proud to have been a part of the house’s legacy and hope to see a 1st place soon.

To sum it all up, the participation throughout the house was incredible and only matched by the effort and energy each of the boys put in to everything they did throughout the year. I’m humbled to have had the opportunity to serve the house with my cohorts. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of the journey through the year and the challenges it presented.

Thank you.
