Rice House Report - 2020

Winners House Cup - 2020

Marlow, McClintock and Joyce only exist because of Rice. Edmund Rice

Starting the year with a new dean and a large group of eager Year 13s, the year began in Mrs. Heathers office to discuss what 2020 would like for us and Rice House. Having her move from McClintock she was apprehensive as our winning form was relatively scarce in the past. However, this was a different year. The inspiration coming from our quote at the beginning of the year that no house would exist without us would thrive through all of our Year 13s and eventually onto everybody in the house. We were in it to win it.

Swimming sports was an epic display of Rice Unity. We chanted, we swam, and we came away with a number of small victories that helped set us up for the year. Our new chant was catchy, and any student can recall the Rice House ‘Munchy Munch.’ We knew we had it from that moment on. At athletics we turned out in mass to participate. We were a force to be reckoned with. A few quick boys were given a large support from the sideline as they charged to victory. We performed well in both events and came out of them in 2nd place overall.

Everything was building up to special character week, and you could feel the energy from all of the Rice men. With the year 11s and 12s supporting we worked hard as a house to get our own song, Samoan hymn and school haka down packed. Our hard work over term 2 paid off and we won the Individual song for the first time in 5 years. We were consistent across the other 2 performances and came away from the week with a solid lead.

Clothing donations, can drives, mufti days and Bruce challenges came next. Every big and little event built up this year being our year. Rice’s year. Thanks to all the whanau for their overwhelming support. We couldn’t have achieved this special year without contribution from everyone from year 7’s to year 13’s and everybody in-between.
